The Breath of Life garden tells the story of lung cancer in Ireland. It is the country’s biggest cancer killer, with over 2,500 cases diagnosed each year. Survival rates are just 18%, meaning lung cancer patients are often faced with bleak prospects. This is represented by the charred cladding on the studio and dark flowers and planting throughout the garden.

However, with increased awareness of symptoms and innovative new treatments, there is much to be hopeful about. This Breath of Life garden, co-sponsored by MSD and Flogas, mixes the dark and the hopeful narratives around cancer and brings this contrast to life using different textures and colour. The metal sculpture represents the outline of the lungs and the support that is needed for patients through a lung cancer journey.

The garden also highlights the importance of healthy lifestyle choices in reducing the risk of cancer. The planting style is contemporary, with mixed borders, herbs, edible plants, shrubs and flowers.
