Clematis 'ST17333’ (Multi Pink), submitted by Van der Starre from Boskoop, has been voted Best Novelty at Garden Trials and Trade 2019.

At the second edition of Garden Trials and Trade, 19 plants were judged by a professional judging committee from the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society).

The jury awarded two plants with a gold medal, three silver and four bronze.

Baptisia ‘Pink Truffles’
Baptista ‘Pink Truffles’ is a new colour in the Baptista range. The flowers are bright pale pink and appear in late spring. Its compact and shorter growth make the plant very suitable for every garden. Baptista is easy to grow and needs very little maintenance, and because of this it can be used in numerous situations, such as large-scale planting, as a background in borders or as a stand-alone. Walters Gardens Inc. from Zeeland, MI (USA) bred this plant, which is protected under plant breeding legislation. Rijnbeek and Son perennials export B.V. markets the plant and also submitted it for the novelty showcase.

Choisya ‘LISSTAR’ (GOLD STAR)
Choisya ‘LISSTAR’ (GOLD STAR) has been selected for its beautiful golden yellow and luminous foliage, which maintains its shine all year round. The plant can survive direct sunlight. The large, delicate and elongated leaves give the plant an extra dash of elegance. The plant has a round shape and grows quickly. The small white flowers are fragrant and appear in spring, followed by a second flowering in autumn. Choisya ‘LISSTAR’ (GOLD STAR) was bred by Liss Forest Nurseries from Greatham, Liss (England). An application has been made for protection under plant breeding legislation. SAPHO from La Ménitré (France) submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also markets it.

Clematis ‘Evipo098’ (SARAH ELISABETH)
Clematis ‘Evipo098’ (SARAH ELISABETH) is a long-blooming Clematis. The pink flowers consist of six or seven pointed sepals with nicely contrasting red anthers. The flowers appear abundantly from late spring until the end of autumn. The plant is a good repeat bloomer, grows to about 1.2 meters tall and needs to be pruned back hard. This Clematis is bred by The Guernsey Clematis Nursery Ltd from Vale (Guernsey) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Hoogeveen Plants from Hazerswoude submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and is also bringing it onto the market.

Clematis ‘Evipo111’ (TRANQUILITÉ)
Clematis ‘Evipo111’ (TRANQUILITÉ) is an attractive and abundantly flowering clematis that is highly suitable for small gardens due to its compact growth. The flowers have pale blue sepals with a light vein fading to white, which contrasts beautifully with the reddish-brown stamens. The plant flowers abundantly for a long period, from late spring until early autumn. Thanks to its light colour, it can also be planted against a background with dark leaves or among free-standing bushes or roses in the garden. The plant grows to approx. 120 cm tall and needs to be pruned back hard. This Clematis is bred by The Guernsey Clematis Nursery Ltd from Vale (Guernsey) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Hoogeveen Plants from Hazerswoude submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and is also bringing it onto the market.

Clematis ‘ST17333’ (Multi Pink)
Clematis ‘ST17333’ (Multi Pink) is a mutant plant from the hardy Clematis ‘Hagley Hybrid’. The plant is very healthy and produces an abundance of unique semi-double to double, light pink blooms even when young. Multi Pink is a wonderful addition both in the garden or as a potted plant on the balcony. The breeder is Van der Starre BV from the town of Boskoop, who also submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.

Diervilla rivularis ‘SMNDRSF’ (KODIAK® BLACK)
Proven Winners® Diervilla rivularis ‘SMNDRSF’ (KODIAK® BLACK) is a shrub that is easy to maintain. With its striking dark purplish-black foliage, it flourishes in shady and dry spots. KODIAK® BLACK blooms in early summer with light yellow flowers which contrast beautifully with the dark foliage. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful bright red. Colour in your garden during the entire season. It is very hardy and grows to 90 cm high and 70 cm wide. The plant is protected under plant breeding legislation. Valkplant BV from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bailmacfive’ (ENDLESS SUMMER SUMMER LOVE®)
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bailmacfive’ (ENDLESS SUMMER SUMMER LOVE®) is an excellent addition to the ENDLESS SUMMER series of hydrangeas that flower continually. SUMMER LOVE® has a compact and sturdy shape with healthy dark green foliage. The plant produces an abundance of strawberry red to deep purple flowers (if treated with aluminum sulfate) up till autumn, thus adding colour throughout the season. SUMMER LOVE® was bred by Michael A. Dirr from Newport Minnesota (USA) and an application has been made for protection under plant breeding legislation. Bailey Nurseris Inc. from Newport, MN (USA) markets the plant and also submitted it for the novelty showcase.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hocomagicevo’ (MAGICAL EVOLUTION)
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hocomagicevo’ (MAGICAL EVOLUTION) is a beautiful, strong Hydrangea macrophylla with large pink or blue flowers. The plant grows in a short and compact shape, so growth regulators are no longer necessary during cultivation. The variety is suitable for both indoors and in the garden. MAGICAL EVOLUTION was discovered as a mutant by Dijk – Van Dijk from De Lier (NL). Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for. Kolster bv from Boskoop submitted the plant and is also responsible for marketing it.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘SchrollA20’ (SPARKLING BLUE)
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘SchrollA20’ (SPARKLING BLUE) is a new, abundantly flowering Hydrangea with a sparkling blue colour, and flowers on every branch. This species reblooms, so new flowers appear throughout the flowering season, and these flowers also change hue beautifully. SPARKLING BLUE was created by Schroll Gartneriet Brylle ApS from Årslev (Denmark) and protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for. De Jong Plant BV from Boskoop will market the plant from 2020 and has submitted the plant for approval as a novelty.

Hydrangea serrata ‘DOLFRANC’ (DOLCE FRANCE)
The foliage of Hydrangea serrata ‘DOLFRANC’ (DOLCE FRANCE) is purple in spring and turns green in summer. The large round panicles are full and dense. The creamy white sepals have purple edges that turn pink during flowering. The plant has a round shape and abundantly branching stems. DOLCE FRANCE flowers abundantly, also on first-year wood. The plant produces a beautiful second flowering, making it an eye-catcher in the garden throughout the season. This Hydrangea was bred by M.F. Doll from France and an application for protection under plant breeding legislation has been made. SAPHO from La Ménitré (France) submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also markets it.

Itea virginica ‘SMNIVDFC’ (SCENTLOVE®)
Proven Winners® Itea virginica ‘SMNIVDFC’ (SCENTLOVE®) offers the complete package! Beautifully scented large white flowers in combination with glossy leaves and exceptional autumn colours keep this compact, highly shade-resistant plant interesting all season. SCENTLOVE® is also ideal for use in bedding when laying out greenery. The plant is very hardy, and grows to about 70-cm high and 90-cm wide. SCENTLOVE® is protected under plant breeder’s rights. Valkplant BV from Boskoop has submitted the plant for approval as a novelty.

Lomandra longifolia ‘Roma 13’ (WHITE SANDS)
Lomandra longifolia ‘Roma 13’ (WHITE SANDS) is a beautiful plant from the Lomandra series. It has subtly variegated foliage and produces yellow flowers from April to October. Most remarkable characteristics: The light-coloured foliage provides beautiful colour contrast in your garden. The plant is very low-maintenance and hardy. WHITE SANDS is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Robert Harrison from Tynong, Australia. Hoogeveen Plants BV from Hazerswoude-Dorp markets the plant and has submitted it for the novelty showcase.

Phlox ‘Fashionably Early Princess’
Phlox ‘Fashionably Early Princess’ blooms approximately 2 to 3 weeks earlier than other Phlox paniculata varieties. The flowers are light fuchsia pink and bloom throughout summer with a second flowering in autumn. The sturdy green foliage stays beautiful throughout the season. The plant is mildew-resistant and has an expanding growth thanks to root shoots. Phlox ‘Fashionably Early Princess’ is a larger variety and because of this, is best placed in the centre or at the back of borders. Walters Gardens Inc. from Zeeland, MI (USA) bred this plant, which is protected under plant breeding legislation. Rijnbeek and Son perennials export B.V. markets the plant and also submitted it for the novelty showcase.

Schizophragma hydrangeoides ‘Minsnow3’ (SNOW SENSATION)
Schizophragma hydrangeoides ‘Minsnow3’ (SNOW SENSATION) is an excellent improvement of the variety. It is stronger, easy to grow and flowers very abundantly right from the start. The new shoots are purple. The plant is covered in flowers in June and July. The plant blooms in large umbels of 15 to 20 cm, consisting of heart-shaped cream white bracts that are 3 to 4 cm in size. The oval and serrated leaves of 6 to 12 cm are either pointed or rounded off. They are dark green with a bluish green back and have red stalks. The shoots are also tinted red. The plant forms small supportive roots with which it attaches itself. It is ideal as a climber on a tree trunk and can also be used against walls, fences and small or large gates. SNOW SENSATION is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Pépinières Minier from Beaufort-en-Vallée (France). Spiraea japonica ‘MINSPI07’ (ZEN’SPIRT GOLD)
Spiraea japonica ‘MINSPI07’ (ZEN’SPIRT GOLD) is a compact, abundantly branching Spiraea that remains small. In spring and summer, the foliage is a beautiful luminous golden colour. The flowers are striking. The beautiful foliage and the decorative shape are what makes this plant special and suitable for small spaces. ZEN’SPIRIT GOLD is also suitable for pots. The plant was bred by Hortival Diffusion from Beaufort-en-Anjou (France) and an application has been made for protection under plant breeding legislation. SAPHO from La Ménitré (France) submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also markets it.

Spiraea japonica ‘MINSPI02’ (ZEN’SPIRT CARAMEL)
Spiraea japonica ‘MINSPI02’ (ZEN’SPIRT CARAMEL) forms a beautifully compact and dense shrub with attractive orange caramel coloured shoots in spring. After a few weeks, the foliage turns green. Pruning causes this process to be repeated. In summer, the purple-pink flowers that are typical for the Japanese Spiraea appear. In autumn, the plant gets beautiful red hues. ZEN’SPIRIT CARAMEL brings colour to the border or in pots on the patio. The plant is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Hortival Diffusion from Beaufort-en-Anjou (France). Spiraea nipponica ‘SMNSNFD’ (WEDDING CAKE)
Proven Winners® Spiraea nipponica ‘SMNSNFD’ (WEDDING CAKE) produces an explosion of pure white panicles in late spring, which contrast beautifully with the dark blue foliage. WEDDING CAKE® produces a natural, compact growth. The plant is very easy to maintain and is perfectly suitable for any type of garden. Weigela florida ‘BRS1’ (Lime Monster)
Weigela florida ‘BRS1’ (Lime Monster) is a seedling of Weigela florida. The light green leaves of this cultivar can grow to 25 cm long! The plant grows to approximately 1.5 metres in height. Lime Monster is very hardy and is best planted in groups. However, the Weigela florida ‘BRS1’ (Lime Monster) also comes into its own as a stand-alone. The plant was bred by Bronislaw Szmit from Ciechanow (Poland) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Van Vliet New Plants from Stroe submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also placed it on the market.

Weigela florida ‘VUKOZ041323’ (COLOURTWIST® SUNNY SIDE UP)
Proven Winners® Weigela florida ‘VUKOZ041323’ (COLOURTWIST® SUNNY SIDE UP) blooms abundantly in spring with large white flowers with a sunny yellow centre. The flowers contrast beautifully with the dark green foliage, which gives the plant a beautiful appearance during the rest of the season. COLOURTWIST® SUNNY SIDE UP is extremely hardy and grows to approximately one metre high and wide. An application has been made for protection under plant breeding legislation.
